Al-Kauthar is a pond in the Paradise from which the Ummah of the Prophet (PBUH) will drink on the Day of Judgment

Translation of Surah al-Kauthar: “(O Prophet,) surely We have given to you Al-Kauthar. So, offer Salah (prayer) to your Lord, and sacrifice. Surely it is your enemy whose traces are cut off.”

The situation in which this surah was revealed:

Qasim (RA), the son of the Prophet (PBUH) passed away at his tender age. Thus, the disbelievers of Makkah, especially AasIbnWail taunted him by the word Abtar. Abtar is someone who does not have any male child and thus, his progeny does not continue. So, Allah Almighty revealed this verse to console his beloved prophet. Allah Almighty said that the Prophet (PBUH) was granted such a great bounty which was given to none of his predecessors. And, this bounty is the pond of Kauthar. His followers will be great in number. Abtarareactually his enemies who will have no one to remember them. Ultimately, the Prophet (PBUH) assumed such a position in the world that each and every moment of his life got recorded in the books. Each and every word and deed of him is still in practice. There are countless people in this world who are always ready to follow him and die for his sunnah and they will always remain as such, in sha Allah. On the contrary, those who taunted the Prophet (PBUH) are not known to anyone. If they are ever remembered, they are just remembered with hatred.

The popularity of the Prophet (PBUH):He was granted such a high position of popularity that his name is chanted even today, after fourteen centuries on each and every moment at every place from the mosques along with the name of Allah Almighty. Along with the testimony for the oneness of Allah, the apostleship of the Prophet (PBUH) is testified. No one can become a true believer unless he believes in the apostleship of Muhammad (PBUH) also along with asserting for the oneness of Allah. No moment of time passes by when the salawat is not offered to the Prophet (PBUH). This exalted position is held by the Prophet of all the humans and jinns who are to come till the Day of Judgment, not only in this world but also he will enjoy the same position in the hereafter too. Thus, he will, on the Day of Judgment, enjoy the coveted position of great intercession by the virtue of which he will intercede for his Ummah on the Day of Resurrection. Verse seventy nine of Surah al-Isra suggests that we should mindfully perform the TahajjudSalah to enjoy his intercession.

His progeny:All the children of the Prophet (PBUH) were born to Khadijah (RA) in Makkah, except Ibrahim(RA) who was born to MariyaQibtiya(RA)in Madinah. At the time of her marriage, Khadijah (RA) was of forty years. It means she was older than the Prophet (PBUH) by fifteen years. Moreover, she had already married twice before marrying to the Prophet (PBUH). She bore children to her previous husbands too. She passed away when the Prophet (PBUH)reached fifty years of his life. This way, the Prophet (PBUH) passed his entire youthful life (from 25 to fifty years) with a widow woman.

Prophet (PBUH) had three sons namely, Qasim, Abdullah and Ibrahim (RA). He (PBUH) had four daughters: Zainab, Ruqaiya, UmmeKulthum and Fatimah (RA). His progeny descended from his daughters, and they will (God willing) continue till the Day of Judgment. His followers, who are like his progeny, will be in such a great number that will surpass the followers of all the previous prophets. Also, they will be honoured more than the previous people.

The literal meaning of Al-Kauthar is “abundant goodness”. This is also the name of the pond which will be given at the disposal of the Prophet (PBUH) on the Day of Judgment. His ummah will drink and quench their thirst from it. “One day the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was sitting amongst us that he dozed off. He then raised his head smilingly. We said: What makes you smile, o Messenger of Allah? He said: A Sura has just been revealed to me, and then recited: In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. Verily We have given the Kauthar (fount of abundance). Therefore, turn to thy Lord for prayer and offer sacrifice, and surely thy enemy is cut off (from the good). Then he (the Holy Prophet) said: Do you know what Kauthar is? We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (PBUH) said: It (Kauthar) is a canal which my Lord, the Exalted and Glorious, has promised me, and there is an abundance of good in it. It is a cistern and my people would come to it on the Day of Resurrection, and tumblers there would be equal to the number of stars. Some people would be turned away from (among the people gathered there). Upon this, I would say: My Lord, they are amongst my people, and He (the Lord) would say: You do not know that he innovated new things (in Islam) after you.” (Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

What is the pond of Al-Kauthar? The ahadith say that there is a river in the Paradise from which water flows into the pond of Al-Kauthar through two drains. The Kauthar will appear in the plane of resurrection and the ummah of the Prophet (PBUH) will drink from it before entering the Paradise. The Prophet (PBUH) will be having a seat in the middle of the pond. Its length will span the area between Ila (a region between Jordan and Palestine) to Sanaa (Yemen), while its width will span the area between Ila to Hajfah (region between Jeddah to Rabigh). The water of the pond of Al-Kauthar will be more white than milk, colder than ice and sweeter than honey. The soil beneath it will smell more than the musk.Everyone who will drink from it will never be thirstyagain.

“So, offer Salah (prayer) to your Lord, and sacrifice.” The first verse of the Surah tells that the Prophet (PBUH) has been granted a great bounty in the form of Al-Kauthar. So, he should do two things to express gratitude: offering salah and sacrifice. In the light of the Holy Quran and ahadith, the entire Muslim community believes that the most important worship after belief (Emaan) is salah. Therefore, Allah Almighty has spoken the most about salah in the Holy Quran. According to the statement of the Prophet (PBUH), “Man will be first questioned about salah on the Day of Judgment.” Even the last will of the Prophet (PBUH) is related to salah. A great part of twenty three years of his prophetic life was spent right in salah. Therefore, we should, apart from the obligatory prayers, also be mindful of the Sunnah and Nafl prayers.

Sacrifice is also a great form of worship. Thus, the Prophet (PBUH) offered a sacrifice of hundred camels, out of which, he slaughteredsixty three camels with his own hand. The rest thirty seven camels were slaughtered by Ali (RA). (Sahih Muslim) Likewise, the Prophet (PBUH) said: No good deed is more beloved to Allah on tenth of DhilHijjah than flowing the blood of the sacrificial animal. In another verse of the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty mentioned the sacrifice along with salah. (Say, my prayer, my offering, my life and my death are for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.)

“Surely it is your enemy whose traces are cut off.” It means that it is the enemies of the Prophet (PBUH) who will be left without progeny to remember them. But the progeny of the Prophet (PBUH) will last till the Day of Judgment, although it is from his daughters’ side. His followers will become countless till the Day of Judgment. The number of his followers will surpass the number of the followers of all prophets on the Day of Judgment.

Lesson for us in the verse: (1) believing that existence of the pond of Al-Kauthar that it is true and the ummah of the Prophet (PBUH) will quench their thirst on the Day of Judgment. The ahadith related to the pond of Al-Kautharare narrated by about fifty Companions (RA). (2) Mindfulness of the daily five prayers. (3) Offering sacrifices during the days of sacrifice as much as possible. (4) Allah Almighty has granted the Prophet (PBUH) the high position in this world as well as in the hereafter. (5) The enemies of the Prophet (PBUH) will face loss in this world as well as in the hereafter. There is a severe punishment for them. (6) Those who innovate new things in the religion will be deprived of Al-Kauthar. Therefore, we should stay mindful in this regard.
